Can creativity help between counselling sessions ?

For some people the time between  psychotherapy or counselling sessions can be stressful. Having a counsellor who understands your truth can be beneficial however it maybe an entire week before you feel understood again or even talking to another human being. That may sound strange to those who are very social or are not avoiding terror from the past.

For those who find waiting for the next session intolerable creating with paints, writing, pens, clay, nature, buttons, sewing or many others. Remember this is an endeavour that is suppose to be calming. There is no perfection needed and try not to listen to messages from the past or school about negative ideas you might have been told in connection to art or creativity.

Some people may fear trying creativity in between sessions because they feel there not very good. Keep in mind when professional artists first started their art it was not so great and they improved as the years moved forward. There are videos on how to do various art on sites like YouTube and if you want to do writing or journaling then there is lots of ideas online. If you would like to do a creative course from a book then Julia Cameron’s The Artists Way is excellent and therapeutic.

The picture attached to this blog I did online by taking a photo and using a photo app to adjust it so it looked like Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night. So I was creating via various apps and you could as well.

When I work with clients I will encourage them to try something creative and creativity is used in some of my sessions. For some people their art, music or writing can also help to explain their truth and release some of the trauma from years ago.
