Adoption Counselling

What is Adoption Counselling:

In 2010 regulations were made into law so that those connected to adoption need to have adoption counselling with a specially trained counsellor which I trained for in 2022 so I can help those who need counselling. Regulations are beginning to shift so those with lots of knowledge in other areas can also counsel those who were adopted. Supportive counselling is for those who are thinking about adoption, have been through the adoption process or may have lost a child to either their child being placed into the foster or adoption system or those who lost a child to adoption due to family or societal pressures. It is also for those who found out in their late teens or the death of a parent that they were adopted. It can also be for adults that were adopted decades ago and are trying to figure out what happened even though this can be hard.

Some people were adopted into families that were good or good enough but during the teens or later wanted to know a bit more about their biological background. Sometimes the adoption process can take a few shifts before a child is placed. They may have become separated from their biological mum for a variety of reasons; then placed with a foster family then to a family who has adopted them. Some children can be in the care system longer that others and experience situations children shouldn’t need to face.  The effects may be carried in the child then adult for longer than expected.

Who needs Adoption Counselling:

A lot of different feelings have come up from being adopted which can be helped with counsellingSome may have had a really good adoption but still may have questions about who they are as people. Other people may have had a disturbed time in being placed in varied foster homes, and adoptive families or might have been in the care system for a while before being adopted. Some may of remembering having a mum or dad a little but don’t know much else apart from documents about their birth. People also may be trying to find a family member by looking online or doing DNA tests which are generally not very accurate as it depends on how many people from that place or country are also on that DNA company list.

How long does it take:

It is not a quick fix so we start with six sessions and then move on to more if needed.

Benefits:

One can start to feel more comfortable in who they are and who they may be in the future. They might have found their birth family and want some help in dealing with that some of it feel safer. It can help with the effects which might be from loneliness, self-esteem that feels low or not good enough, the thought of log or grief that might occur, being unsure of who you are and relationship difficulties from not feeling secure enough. These feelings might start to resolve while going through adoption counselling.
