Nervousness

What is Anxiety or being constantly nervous?

Nervousness or anxiety around certain things that seem to take up a lot of time can prevent you from meeting your goals or stop you from finding enjoyment. We are increasingly living in a world that is fast paced with deadlines and challenges that are not always met. Some people have anxiety from conditions such as autism or ADHD which has become more recognised over time. I have worked with these two conditions and others that have neurodiversity. Dyslexia and dyspraxia are common traits in my own family and I understand it can make school, further studies and work a little more challenging however by thinking outside the box some people come up with some fantastic solutions to deal with life. It can cause problems with going out and meeting people like friends, cause reactions like a racing heartbeat or needing the bathroom, stop you from visiting new places, and start doubting who you are as a person. People usually see varied symptoms before realizing it is anxiety. Anxiety can come for those that have autism, those that have general anxiety disorder or other mental health conditions. Anxiety can also happen to those that have performance related work goals or those with perfectionism streaks within them. It has also been found that people with autoimmune conditions can have times when they feel either anxious or depressed because health matters are another stress alongside many others in life.

Who needs it:

People who have a level of symptoms that seem to be more than what other people experience. It can humiliate feeling a certain way because they have a fear of doing activities that don’t seem to worry others. It can cause sweating, trembling, racing heartbeat double checking people are safe or that you have locked your home repeatedly, checking your work is right even though others say it looks fine and noting how safe everything is before doing a task and it can cause fast breathing when faced with the item that brings nervousness.

How long it takes:

it can be helpful to have 6 sessions of therapy which can help to resolve some of the anxiety. It may take more if you realise the fear is attached to another event in your earlier life. I can use a technique called Brainspotting which can help; this is done by your eyes following a point that moves at a certain speed and is similar to EMDR. I tend to use my finger rather than a pointer as some people don’t like them.

Benefits:

It can help with doing activities or meeting people that may have brought on symptoms. It can help make life easier to deal with and bring back enjoyment.
